AUROBINDO CHAUDHURI MEMORIAL
GREAT INDIAN DREAM FOUNDATION
Karmani Hite is a combination of two Sanskrit words; ‘karmani’ means in action and ‘hite’ means in welfare work. So the phrase Karmani Hite means to work for the social welfare.

Welcome Dear Readers,
Aurobindo Chaudhuri Memorial Great Indian Dream Foundation [ACM GIDF] welcomes the readers of the December 07, issue of Karmani Hite the newsletter of ACM GIDF, a Social wing of Planman Consulting and the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM). GIDF is glad to share its account of social initiatives across 12 states in India with people having social interest and those who dream of making India an educated, healthy nation, free of poverty and its human indignities.

A School a week campaign!
We at ACM GIDF firmly believe that besides health, education is the only asset that a nation can provide to its citizens. Despite the low cost involved in providing education at the primary and secondary level, the current trend in India is not impressive and the vision of a literate India, seems difficult to be realized. Taking forward the task of making India entirely literate ACM GIDF is glad to Inform its supporters and all the concerned citizens of India about the launch of the ‘A Week a School Campaign’ which aims to establish 52 schools around Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad and Bangalore in the year 2007-08. To know more about this campaign and contribute kindly visit www.gidf.org or write to us at care@gidf.org

Our approach to holistic development of children

Our Education centers not only cater to the academic needs of the child but also provides essential physical and mental growth opportunities. Working towards this end our Bangalore chapter organized an outdoor visit session for the children, where they were taken to ‘Jelly beans’. Jelly beans is an organization that works towards improving the physical movement and coordination of various body parts. The session was highly motivating and the children had a lot of fun accompanied by valuable lessons in physical development.

A dental health and hygiene session was organized in the Kothalchavadi and Kilpauk ECD centers in-order to generate awareness about dental hygiene amongst the children. During the session issues like importance of regularly brushing teeth and proper ways of brushing were discussed. After the session was over free toothpaste and toothbrush were distributed to the children.

Empowering Adolescent Girls.

Other that providing education in academic fields our centers also provide skill training to adolescents to help them improve their and their families’ financial position. Our Mumbai chapter has initiated mehndi classes in Gyaneshawar Nagar and Nargis Dutt Nagar for adolescent girls. The initiative has been supported by Jan Shiksha Sanstan and two batch of students have already completed the course.

Children’s Day Celebration at ACM GIDF.

In Pune a three day event was organized at the Kishkindha Nagar center and various activities like singing competition , sports, movie show, crafting activities, IQ activities, Quiz competition, and health awareness program were conducted. A total of 94 children participated in this event. The objective of conducting the event was to create awareness about the education project in the community and increase the participation of the children in the event. Through this event we were able to reach out to as many as 138 children of the community and provide them a place for enjoyment and fun activities which they normally lack; the children became more aware about good behavior and health and hygiene issues; the event also exposed them to new games and songs and educational movies, which can broadly be classified as the achievements of the center.
Children’s day was celebrated across all our educational centers in India and the staff and children together had great fun. In Chennai a fancy dress competition was conducted for ECD children where every child was dressed in his or her own unique way adding value to the whole event. The positive aspect of involving children in such events is that they gain confidence and are able to express their talents and develop interest in extra curricular activities.

Creating awareness about health issues

Anti- tobacco campaign.

ACM GIDF with the support of WHO is actively involved in the anti- tobacco campaign in-order to promote a tobacco free society. In the month of November 2007 we undertook a lot of awareness activity in Madanpur Khadar area of Delhi which are briefly mentioned below:
  • A mass awareness pavilion was set up in-order to motivate and counsel community people to give up their tobacco habits.
  • Anti-tobacco clubs have been set up for motivating the community children to raise awareness against tobacco usage.
  • Wall painting and banner displays have been done to discourage tobacco usage.
  • Advocacy have been undertaken for Dist. Officials , elected representative and professional bodies in-order to encourage the involvement of different stakeholders to promote tobacco free societies. Awareness program has also been organized for other civil societies and educational institutions so as to help them create awareness among their beneficiaries. Local community leaders have also been called in, to support the cause and assist in creating a tobacco free society.

In Auraiya district of Uttar Pardesh eight essay writing competitions and slogan writing competition on the issue of drawbacks of tobacco usage, were held in various schools. The best of the slogan were written in banners and displayed in various parts of the district. These activities were accompanied by four drawing competitions in schools in-order to create awareness among school children about ill affects of tobacco usage and understand their knowledge about tobacco consumption and its negative affect on the society.
Getting in innovative way of creating awareness on this issue our Uttar Pradesh chapter conducted 15 theater shows at various public places of Auryia district which is gaining popularity and various quarters of the society are inviting the theater groups to perform in their locality. Films and movies are known to have a great impact on the peoples mind and thus 13 movie shows on anti- tobacco issue were screened at various schools of the district. Adding value to these gamut of activities an anti- tobacco mass awareness rally was organized on 6th November 2007, in Pahpund village of Auryia dist where a total of 500 students from five local schools participated and made the rally a huge success.

Assisting communities in improving their financial condition.

In the month of November 2007, our Madhya Pradesh chapter formed thirteen new SHG taking the number of SHG under ACM GIDF to a whopping one hundred and above. Going by this fact and number we have become the first civil society in Guna district to have the highest number of SHG’s under its direct reach and assistance. Apart from uniting the rural people esp. women in the form of SHG we also try to make the process more profitable for these women folks and help them understand better the proper functioning of an SHG. These we do through capacity building and experience sharing sessions and in the month of November 2007, we conducted two capacity building workshops for new SHGs in Vijaypur village under Guna district. This workshops were mainly focused on proper utilization of loan amount, coordination with in the SHG women and rapport building with all the team members of the organization and experience sharing with old SHGs and their members.

In Auriya district of Uttar Pradesh, GIDF have constructed two poultry farms with the aim of providing employment opportunities to the youth and men belonging to the economically backward class. The villagers were provided technical training on poultry farming and exposure visits were organized to existing poultry farms for practical training before handing over the farms to the villagers on 15th November 2007. GIDF also provided 500 chicks each to the two farms along with feeding material and necessary medicines for the first batch.
