Computer Education on Wheels to Remote Villages
With the view to provide computer education to children in remote rural villages, Project E-Shiksha was launched on 13th Feb, 2008 by District Magistrate (DM) Auriya in Uttar Pradesh. The project is first of its first kind in India wherein an air conditioned vehicle equipped with 18 laptops will travel from school to school disseminating valuable e-shiksha to rural children.
In the first phase, the Mobile computer unit will visit schools in Pata, Khanpur, Keshampur, Jua, Kanho and Khanpur. The response from parents and school authorities has been overwhelming and 120 students from six schools have already been enrolled. GIDF is planning to double the number from March onwards.
The project would cover 1100 children in one year across 11 government schools in India. GIDF promotes the girl child to participate in this training programme and gives rebate to the needy and deserving students in their fee entitling them to avail of this worthwhile opportunity. |

A new platform was provided to our adolescent girls to exhibit their talent at Kala Ghoda Festival in Mumbai. The handmade items of our Self Help Groups were on display and a counter for Mehndi was set up in which the adolescent girls trained on Mehndi designing applied mehndi to the visiting customers. The event provided exposure to the talent of these girls and they gained confidence in dealing with customers. Moreover, the customers kept pouring into the stall and appreciated and admired the talent of our SHG women and adolescent girls. |

Health Check Up Camps for Children
Health check ups were organized for children at two Early Child Development Centers namely Kilpauk and Kothalchavadi in the Chennai chapter of GIDF. 34 children participated in these camps and the outcome was that the children were under nourished. Considering health as the most important factor, for children’s physical and mental well-being, these camps were organized and it was decided to conduct a meeting with the parents of these children and share with them the importance of nutritional diet for children to ensure that these children are found fit and healthy after the next medical examination. |

Golden Month for Project SAKHI
Considering the growth of project SAKHI, it was the golden month for the project.
This month GIDF formed 9 new Self Help Groups in the villages namely Pagara, Mureni, Ghatachak, Sarasveh and Semra and have opened accounts of 12 new SHGs. With this endeavour, 95% of our SHG’s have been linked with the financial institutions.
Formation of SHGs ensures that rural women are incorporated into the developmental process by undertaking an economic activity suited to their skills and resources. Empowering and promoting women leadership in villages and urban slums through seminars, trainings, rallies, legal aid and small business loans has always been one of our main priorities. |

Session on Safe Sex Practices
Meeting the critical needs of HIV/AIDS prevention is what project EHSSAS is all about. Understanding the psycho-social problem of creating awareness and discussing the causes of HIV/AIDS, we try to meet the specific needs of the target communities in their own unique way, however with the only objective of creating awareness about the disease checking its spread
In the last month, GIDF conducted a session on safe sex practices with 15-Self Help Group women in Pailika Bazaar to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and to promote safe sex practices in the high risk groups. There was also a session organized with the women in Bairai village on 14th February 2008. Both these sessions were helpful in generating consciousness about safe sex practices aimed at preventing the incidence of HIV/AIDS especially in the red light areas.
